Local Contexts Summit

CARA is pleased to be hosting Local Contexts for their first Summit!

Local Contexts is a global initiative that supports Indigenous communities with tools that attribute cultural authority of heritage and data. By focusing on Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property and Indigenous Data Sovereignty, Local Contexts helps Indigenous communities repatriate knowledge and gain control over how their data is collected, managed, displayed, accessed, and used in the future.

The Summit will bring together people from across the Local Contexts community focusing on Indigenous authority, control, and governance over Indigenous knowledges and data in the humanities and the sciences. Following the Summit will be the premiere of “Awasəwehlαwə́lətinα wikəwαmok – They Returned Home,” a film by the Penobscot Nation and Local Contexts.

The Summit will be structured as a series of panels, presentations, and collaborative audience discussions. Speakers include: Monique Tyndall (Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans), Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans; Darren Ranco (Penobscot Nation), University of Maine; Maui Hudson (Whakatōhea), Local Contexts and University of Waikato; James Eric Francis, Sr. (Penobscot Nation), Penobscot Nation; Keolu Fox (Kānaka Maoli), University of California San Diego and ENRICH Global Chair (2022-2023); Krystal Tsosie (Diné/Navajo), Arizona State University and ENRICH Global Chair (2022-2023); Marina McDougall, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University; Joshua Shaw, Dartmouth College; Andrew Rominger, University of Maine; John Deck, GEOME; Shawna Sadler, ORCID; and Jane Anderson, Local Contexts and New York University.
